Purpose
The purpose of the Committee shall be to review and provide advice respecting strategies for developing a more comprehensive plan which uses a wide-ranging use of “human-powered” travel throughout the municipality that could include such things as expanded use of roadways for designated cycle paths, maintenance and construction of walking paths and sidewalks, etc. The purpose of this committee is to work towards increasing transportation opportunities in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury that are “human-powered” and are an alternative choice to motorized transportation.
Mandate
The mandate of the Committee is to provide advice and comments to Council and staff regarding “Active Transportation.” This term refers to any form of human-powered transportation – walking, cycling, in-line skating, skateboarding, etc. Significant health, social, environmental and economic benefits can be realized through increased Active Transportation. Council wants to ensure that Active Transportation is a viable alternative to motorized travel in Bradford West Gwillimbury. The Active Transportation Committee will review town standards for new neighbourhoods, assess barriers to “walkability” in existing neighbourhoods, and develop programs that encourage Active Transportation within homes, businesses and schools.
Composition
The membership of the Committee will be comprised as follows:
• One (1) Member of Council; and
• Six (6) citizen members
Only members of the Committee may vote on any issue.
Meeting Schedule
The Committee meeting schedule has yet to be determined, with the specific dates and times for meetings to be determined by the Committee at the beginning of each year. Please click here to review the upcoming meeting dates. Additional meetings may be called by the Chairperson in consultation with the Clerk or his/her designate. The Chairperson can cancel any meeting.
Meetings of the Committee shall not conflict with regular meetings of Committee of the Whole and regular meetings of Council.
Lead Department/Reporting Relationship
The lead department for the Committee shall be Engineering Services, Leisure Services, and Planning & Development Services.
Staff from any of the Town’s departments will attend meetings of the Committee as required to provide expertise or report on various matters related to their departmental work plans. Staff from other government or agencies may from time to time attend as necessary to provide expertise or report on various matters related to their work plans.
Any staff member attending meetings of the Committee is not a member of the Committee.
Terms of Office
All citizen members of the Committee will hold office for a term coinciding with the term of Council, and remain in office until their successors are appointed. No one citizen member shall be appointed for more than two consecutive terms. After a maximum of eight years of service on the Committee as a citizen member, an individual will not be appointed again before a four year absence from the Committee as a citizen member.
In the event of a vacancy by death, resignation or from any other cause other than the expiration of the term for which the member was appointed, such vacancy shall be dealt with in accordance with the policies adopted by Council from time to time and the applicable legislation.
Remuneration
No remuneration is paid to the Committee members.
